Fiom must limit the search for family for non-adopted children

Fiom offers help and advice on various topics to people looking for information about their ancestry. The message below concerns the section Searching for Family, not the section Donor Conception. Please note: services related to the KID DNA database and the CDKB will continue to be provided.

For years, Fiom has been committed to helping everyone discover their biological family through its "Searching for Family" program . We carefully guide people in their search for biological family, paying attention to everyone involved. We do this for adoptees, birth parents, donor children, foundlings, foster children, and adults who have never known who their biological parent is.

The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) has informed us that the subsidy for supporting non-adopted people who want to search for their biological family is ending. This is separate from the KID DNA database or the CDKB.

What does this mean?

Fiom can no longer accept new search requests from non-adopted individuals who wish to search for family through channels other than the KID DNA database or the CDKB. People who have already registered for a search will continue to receive support in their search. We understand this may be disappointing. We remain committed to carefully completing ongoing processes and refer new searchers to suitable alternatives.

Alternatives for your search

If you are not adopted and want to search for your biological family, but registering with the KID DNA database or signing up through donorgegevens.nl isn't an option, you can seek assistance from:

  • Red Cross: tracing service for searches in specific situations, such as missing persons or war separation.
  • Professional genealogists or family detectives (note: costs and options may vary).
  • Search yourself via DNA platforms, such as MyHeritage or Ancestry.

We advise you to always seek support from a care provider or confidant, such as a social worker, psychologist or the neighborhood team in your municipality.

What will Fiom continue to do?

The Ministry of Education continues to provide funding for our services through the Fiom KID DNA database and applications through the Cdkb , so these services will continue to operate. You can still register with the KID DNA database and/or request information about your donor via donorgegevens.nl.

Fiom continues to support anyone with questions about their origins. We provide information and advice on questions of ancestry and advocate with the government for equal rights for everyone searching for their biological family. We also maintain contact with the Ministry of Education and Culture because we believe that people who are not adopted but have questions about their origins also have the right to answers.
