LUCKNOW: This is a problem which is aggravating with every passing day. Yet another newborn was found abandoned in the city. The baby girl was
recovered from the bushes near mini stadium in Vikasnagar, Sector 11. Wrapped in a piece of cloth, she was mercilessly tossed into the bushes barely a few hours after birth. Had it not been for a passer-by to spot her, the infant would have not survived. He informed the police which later handed the baby to the Childline (1098).
The baby was recovered late on Saturday night. A passer-by after hearing her cry traced her in the bushes. The police first took the infant to a private hospital for first aid and informed the Childline, which sent its volunteers to collect the baby and got her admitted in the Jhalkari Bai hospital where she will be under medical supervision for two days before being brought to the Rajkiya Shishu Grih at Prag Narain Road. Volunteer have named her as Shubhi.
Nobody can resist the temptation of taking her in the lap after seeing this adorable innocent child. People in the hospital were not ready to believe that anybody could be so cruel to have thrown a baby in bushes to die. The only hope for the baby to get a `home' now is adoption by a couple. "Even if she was an unwanted baby, parents could have shown some sensitivity to leave her at a safe place like temple or hospital," said Varsha Sharma, coordinator Childline.
What makes the problem even more severe is that Shubhi is the 15th unwanted baby (12th girl) to have been found abandoned in the city so far this year. The rate is higher in comparison to 2008, when 21 babies, including 19 girls, were recovered. Girls are abandoned mostly due to strong gender bias in the society. The same is witnessed in adoption also. People make beeline to adopt boys and girls get a chance only if they are good looking and boys are unavailable.
