China Daily reports that in the Yunnan province of China, 11 infants abducted by a human trafficking group were rescued during a bust. 34 suspects were arrested in connection with the case.

According to police, the abducted infants were made up of four girls and seven boys, some of whom were purchased in Yunnan then sold to other provinces.

The child abduction group is reported to have spent 8,000 yuan (US$1,266) to 10,000 yuan purchasing each infant in rural areas of Yanshan and Yunnan province and selling them at 100,000 yuan to 140,000 yuan each in Fujian and Shandong provinces.

One couple being investigated were suspected of abducting and selling a girl from Yunnan in August 2013 . After more than six month’s investigation, the couple’s confession provided the police with sufficient information making it possible to track the abduction group and arrest the head of the group in Yanshan. A large family in Yunnan with the head surnamed of Gong made up the tightly knit group.

As traffickers seek to capitalize on the demand for healthy babies (especially boys) from adoptive parents overseas, baby trafficking remains a serious problem in China. Police in China arrested over 1,000 people in March of this year, who were part of an extensive, online operation involving the illegal trading and adoption of infants. In February, a Chinese obstetrician was convicted in six separate cases from 2011 to 2013 of telling parents their newborns were sick and persuading them to give them up. He was given the death sentence for selling seven babies to a trafficking ring.
