MANGALURU: Childline authorities have rescued an eight-day-old child from being allegedly given for adoption in the city on Monday night.

Reni D'Souza, director, Childline said: "A couple, who had their ninth child on April 13, had given the baby girl allegedly for adoption for Rs 5,000 to a driver hailing from Shivamogga. The child would have been taken to Shivamogga on Tuesday."

According to the statement given by the child's mother, they found it difficult to raise the child, which was their ninth and hence they were giving it to away to an issueless couple allegedly for Rs 5,000.

According to police, the couple from Tamil Nadu had settled down long in the city. They have five boys and four girls. Police said that the woman worked as a housekeeping staff at a hostel in Kulshekar and the husband is unemployed. They knew the couple who did not have children and they had expressed their desire to adopt the child. Therefore, the child was handed over to them, police said.

D'Souza said that the economic status of the couple who were planning to adopt the child was no better.

"We thought at first that it was a case of child trafficking. But it did not appear so in the preliminary inquiry,'' D'Souza said. The woman and her child have been admitted to Lady Goschen Hospital.

Kavoor police have not registered a case in this regard.
