Girl’s biological parents are equally distraught
Ahmedabad: An adoption that began with the intention of embracing a girl who was either orphaned or abandoned, turned out
to be rather traumatic for the child along with her biological and adoptive parents.
While the 11-year-old girl is back to the orphanage she was adopted from, her biological parents have been making rounds of
government offices to secure custody of their daughter and the adoptive parents have had to file a case to invalidate the
adoption, so that the girl can be handed over to her biological parents.
Ahmedabad couple Kamaljeet Singh and Sheeba Mahendiratta said their joy knew no bounds when Veeva became part of
their family. The couple have a 14-year old biological daughter and thought their family was now complete. “When we could
trace Veeva’s biological parents and their whereabouts, why could the authorities in Punjab not do so,” Kamaljeet questioned.
The girl’s biological parents are equally distraught (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/girls-biological-parents-are-equallydistraught). “We have been visiting government offices for our daughter’s custody for five months now, but all we are told is
that the matter is in court. I do not know how our daughter was put up for adoption,” said Gopal Tapri, the girl’s biological father.
SGB International Child Adoption Centre, the agency that facilitated the Veeva’s adoption, says that adoption procedures were
initiated based on the girl’s statements. “There have been around 350 adoptions from our centre,” said Jasbir Kaur, the
president of the orphanage.
