Chennai: An app to help parents in adoption
CHENNAI: Prospective parents could soon be able to adopt children through a mobile application after submitting all the
required documents. The ministry of women and child development (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/ministry-ofwomen-and-child-development) has asked all state resource agencies for suggestions to help launch a parent-friendly app
“The added advantage of a mobile app is that registration process and uploading of documents can be done on the go, from
wherever they are,” said a senior official from the department of social welfare.
Currently, the registration and process for adoption (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/adoption) are online through the
web portal www.cara.nic.in of the Central Adoption Resource Authority (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/CentralAdoption-Resource-Authority) (CARA). The procedure is uniform throughout the country. Prospective parents have to log on the
website if they want to adopt children and receive emails about the progress of their adoption plea. But in a mobile app, they
will not have to wait for emails, but will receive alerts and can check the status of their application.
“Everyone these days do most of their work through mobile phones... it is tough to access the website on CARA on phone,
because of the heavy design. An app will make it easier and more convenient for parents to adopt,” the official said.
Child rights experts have lauded this initiative. Girija Kumarbabu, secretary of Indian Council for Child Welfare, said that it was a
good initiative but it would be better if a pilot study is done first to find out if the app is working as it should and set right the

She also raised concerns about issues of security in terms of pictures of children being accessible to all. But the official said
that the process will be secure as details of children including pictures will be accessible only at a later stage of the application
process.
Currently Tamil Nadu has 82 children waiting to be adopted, as against 2,382 prospective parents who have been waiting for
more than two years to adopt.
