Adoption row: CPM action likely against CWC secretary, Anupama's father
Thiruvananthapuram: Six people, including the parents and sister of
Anupama S Chandran, have moved anticipatory bail applications even
as the family court at Vanchiyoor would deliver its final judgment on the
adoption process of her child.
Anupama's parents PS Jayachandran and Smitha James along with her
sister and brother-in-law have sought bail as the District Court here is
set to consider the case on Thursday.
Anupama had initially approached the Peroorkada Police Station, but
the police had only registered an FIR after the intervention of the state
police chief.
Adoption as per rules: Shiju Khan
Meanwhile, the director of the Woman and Child Welfare department, T
V Anupama, summoned Child Welfare Council general secretary JS Shiju
Khan and sought his explanation on the issue.
Khan later told media persons that the controversial adoption of
Anupama's boy child was done as per rules. He refused to further
comment, citing legal issues.
CPM district unit in a spot
The Thiruvananthapram district unit of the CPM is reportedly perturbed
over the unsavoury issue as five of the six accused in the case are
members of the party.
Besides, Jayachandran and Smitha, their relative, Anil Kumar is also a
member of the Peroorkkada local committee of the CPM.
Anil Kumar is also a former councillor of the Thiruvananthapuram
Municipal Corporation.
The CPM is likely to take action against CWC general secretary Shiju
Khan and Anupama's father PS Jayachandran. Latest reports say the
party might wait a while before invoking disciplinary measures against
the latter.
The government would probably oust Khan from the CWC, while the
CPM may drop Jayachandran from the Peroorkkada local committee. It
is alleged that the CPM has been protecting the duo accused in the
adoption row and a face-saving measure is inevitable.
The CPM district leadership has found itself in a tight spot after the
State leadership and government publicly announced support to
Anupama, a former activist of the party's student wing, SFI.
The CPM state leadership felt its district unit had failed in handling the
issue, thereby tarnishing the party's image. The party has found serious
lapses on the part of Khan.
Meanwhile, a section of party activists demanded action against
Anupama's mother Smitha James, a member of CPM's A-Branch at
Peroorkada. They criticised the delay in the party acting against the
accused.
It was also observed that the accusations against the Home department
could have been avoided if the district leadership had intervened and
acted on time. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is also incharge of the
Home portfolio.
Anupama had earlier alleged that the party district secretary, Anavoor
Nagappan, had ignored her complaint terming it a domestic issue, and
behaved rudely with her.
Child with Andhra couple
Hyderabad: A teacher couple in Andhra Pradesh has adopted Anupama's
baby, latest TV reports claim.
Speaking to a television channel, the couple said all legal procedures
were completed before adopting the child through the Child Welfare
Council. "The baby is safe and happy with us," they said.
The couple also said they came to know about the developments in
Kerala over the adoption scandal through media reports.
