Statement Adoption Association Reformed Gezindte (AVGG) in response to the Standpoint on the future of intercountry adoption of the Minister for Legal Protection, dated April 11, 2022.

On Monday 11 April 2022, the Minister for Legal Protection, FM Weerwind, sent a letter to the House of Representatives containing his position on the future of intercountry adoption. This was in response to the critical report of the Joustra Committee of 8 February 2021.

Our -short- response is as follows:

We are happy and grateful with the choices the minister has made;

The letter has a good tone, the right balance and it's nice that adoption has been clearly chosen as a child protection measure;

It is not about adoptive parents, but about children who now (again) have the opportunity to grow up in a safe family situation;

We wholeheartedly endorse measures to prevent adoption abuse, because adoptive parents do not want to fulfill their wish to have children in such a way;

We hope for a careful, but also rapid elaboration of the plans throughout the chain. With that, we look forward to the moment when all discussion and negative reports about adoption will finally come to an end.

Finally, thanks be to God, who rules all things. The AVGG is based on God's Word. On that basis, we confess in the words of question and answer 27 of the Heidelberg Catechism that the omnipotent and omnipresent power of God, by which he sustains heaven and earth, and all creatures, as yet with his hand, and so rules . . . that all things come to us, not by chance, but from His Fatherly hand. Let this be and remain our starting point in the paths we must take, with or without or despite adoption.

Stay informed

Want to know more about us or about what we do? Stay informed of the latest news and our national and regional meetings. Twice a year we organize a national meeting in Gouda. These national meetings are freely accessible. At the regional meetings (prospective) adoptive parents can exchange experiences with other (prospective) adoptive parents from the region. These meetings are only accessible to members of the AVGG. The AVGG regularly receives information from other organizations in the adoption field. We also publish information that we find interesting for our members on our website.
