A Toronto mother who exposed two known child molesters to her 10-year-old daughter for their perverse sexual gratification was sentenced Tuesday to 6 1/2 years in jail.
“This was a case like no other,” said Justice Gary Trotter in passing sentence on the 61-year-old first offender.
She adopted the 18-month-old girl from Romania in ’97 and “quickly delivered her to a life of chaos, dysfunction, filth and squalour” while living with the woman’s elderly parents in Paris, Ont., said Trotter.
The girl had to care for the frail grandparents, who died in December 2005.
“This is a shocking breach of trust,” said Trotter. He credited a neighbour — who tipped off police — and Det. Const. Kim Percival’s tenacious investigation for ending the abuse of the child.
Last June, a jury found the mother enabled convicted pedophile Randolph “Randie” Bartley, 54, to babysit her daughter between Feb. 1, 2005, and Aug. 21, 2006. The mom slept in one bed, letting Bartley sleep in another bed with the victim.
The mother was also convicted of two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and several counts of obstructing a peace officer and obstructing justice for her attempts to conceal the crimes.
“‘Don’t tell the truth. Play dumb bunny,’” the mother was quoted as saying to the victim.
He quoted Percival as testifying that the mom’s actions kept the police “running around in circles.”
A publication ban — designed to protect the identity of the child — prohibits the media from the mother’s name. The girl is now in the custody of her godmother.
Bartley committed sexual acts on the girl, Trotter said.
“She let him babysit her child overnight in his apartment many times,” said Crown attorney Paul Leishman, who asked for eight to 10 years imprisonment.
He said the woman was introduced to her child’s tormentors, Bartley and Gary Hoare, in jail by infamous pedophile John Douglas Mackenzie in 2003.
Mackenzie was extradited from Toronto to California in 2005 and pleaded guilty in 2010 to five counts of committing lewd acts on a child.
The mom let Hoare, who was freed from jail in 2005, live rent-free in the basement in exchange for renovation work on the home.
Between Jan. 5 and Aug. 17, 2006, she left her child alone with Hoare for extended periods of time while she lived in Toronto.
