KRO-NCRV screens more carefully after incorrectly linked families in Spoorloos
KRO-NCRV will screen the fixers who participate in the Spoorloos program "more carefully" after the news about mismatched families. The broadcaster is in contact with people who have been incorrectly linked and offers them support if necessary, a spokesperson said to NU.nl when asked.
Spoorloos started using DNA testing in 2000 . "In the beginning a few times a year in case of doubt, over time more and more." The program has only been testing for DNA in all cases since 2019.
Over the years, DNA testing has become more accessible to consumers, according to KRO-NCRV. "We can now often test with cheek mucus instead of blood. Many mothers in many South American and Asian countries did not find the latter desirable. DNA samples often ended up at customs and did not even leave the country."
From Van der Spek's program Scammers Tackled , it appeared on Monday that the Spoorloos intermediary had not linked two Dutch people to the right biological parents. This was due to a Colombian fixer, who worked on sixteen quests for the program.
The mismatched cases date from 2004 and 2005. Of the sixteen cases in which the fixer was involved, two mismatches are now known and two matches have been confirmed as correct by previous DNA testing. "We will review the other matters again. If desired and possible, we will still offer those involved a DNA test."
Several organizations are shocked
The organization Fiom, which helps people with parentage research, says it is shocked that two 'mismatches' have been found in the Spoorloos program. Inez Teurlings of the Interlandelijk Adopterden Foundation calls it "extremely painful for all involved".
"They thought they had found something that they have been looking for for years. It is very annoying that this now turns out to be different," says Teurlings. According to a spokesperson for Fiom, it can be very important to know who your family is. "When something like this goes wrong, it's really horrible. When we heard that it went wrong at Spoorloos , we were all shocked."
Fiom helps people in their search for biological family, for example adopted children who are looking for their biological parents or donor children who are looking for their donor. "That is a careful process. In Colombia we work with a government agency. I do not know exactly how Spoorloos works in this and I cannot judge that," said a spokesperson.
DNA tests are not always reliable
A DNA test is not mandatory in a search for biological parents accompanied by Fiom. This is strongly recommended. But DNA tests are not always reliable, according to Teurlings. The further away in the bloodline, the more inaccurate and unreliable the result, says Teurlings. "They say something, but not everything. We often try to manage expectation in adoptees, because a DNA test does not always provide the certainty that is expected."
The foundation advises adoptees to think carefully before participating in a program such as Spoorloos . "You have to go to the media very consciously. After all, you put your whole soul and happiness on the street, and you run the risk of coming into contact with people with wrong intentions."

It is sad and sad for all involved. It is also sometimes really not easy with all the means of today to find the right people. That's why we'd better be a little more lenient with comments on this subject. It's intense enough already. It would be nice if more was known about the subject of 'adoption'. I'm sure a lot of people don't know exactly what emotions, feelings and related issues are going on when talking about adoption. That's why it's so sad for everyone involved.

This is terribly painful for the person concerned. Certainly also for trackless, who do this work with all good intentions. What if it is still unclear, what was the role of the Colombian intermediary? Has he knowingly "matched" the wrong people Does this person get paid according to the number of matches? It's good that this has come to light. Too bad that there is now an aura of fraud around it while much is not yet clear (to the outside world)
