FIOM: Search for missing children from Argentina

Help us fulfill the last wish of Argentine grandmothers

The 'Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo' in Argentina have been looking for their children and grandchildren for years. Children who disappeared during the years of the dictatorship, were robbed and (usually illegally) appropriated in families, whether or not through adoption. Time is running out for these grandmothers. Their greatest wish is to hold these children and grandchildren in their arms.

Background

During the last dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983), many children were born in captivity. In most cases, the parents of these children have been killed or have disappeared. It is not clear where the children ended up. In many cases they have been adopted illegally. It is suspected that a number of these also ended up in the Netherlands. In collaboration with HIJOS Netherlands, Fiom tries to trace these children. Everyone has the right to know where he/she comes from.

Challenges

The search for these children is a special project. At the moment there are still 350 children worldwide missing. A child was found in the Netherlands in 2014. There is a chance that more children have ended up in the Netherlands. Finding these children is a big challenge. The wanted children are difficult to find because very little is known about them.

The grandmothers

The grandmothers who are looking for these grandchildren have united in the Abuelas (grandmothers) de Plaza de Mayo. They got this name because they have been demonstrating weekly since 1977 in this square of Buenos Aires. Due to the advanced age of these grandmothers, the search for the grandchildren is in a hurry.

Can you help us?

In a last attempt to find these children, we draw attention to this subject. We urge anyone to come forward who suspects they may be a child we are looking for or has information that may help us in our search. The people we are looking for were born in the time of the dictatorship and are now between 40 and 48 years old.
