Couple Claims Adoption Agency Embroiled Them in Child-Trafficking Scheme

February 1, 2017ELLEN ROBINSON

(CN) – A Greenville, South Carolina, couple claim they were duped by an adoption agency into believing the Ugandan children they planned to adopt had been relinquished by their mother, only to find themselves enmeshed in a human-trafficking scheme.

In a complaint filed in the Greenville County Court of Common Pleas on Jan. 27, Tyler and Allie Sloan say they contacted defendants European Adoption Consultants and Debra Parris, the director of its African adoption program, in December 2014, and after a preliminary meeting, were accepted to participate in the defendant’s program.

As recounted in the complaint, 14 months passed, and then, in February 2016, Parris told them two children were available for them to adopt: a 7-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy.

"Improve intercountry adoption system, don't stop it"

File: Adoption

Today, Secretary of State for Security and Justice Dijkhoff presented his policy response to the report 'The future of the chain for intercountry adoption' by consultancy firm Andersson Elffers Felix (AEF), and the advice 'Reflection on Intercountry Adoption' of the Council for Criminal Justice and Youth Protection (RSJ). The RSJ advised in November last year to stop intercountry adoption. Defense for Children - ECPAT believes that the State Secretary should implement a number of strong changes in the adoption chain, but sees no improvement in the proposed adjustments on a number of fundamental points.

Defense for Children - ECPAT welcomed the RSJ report and recognizes the identified bottlenecks in adoption. In particular the influence of financial incentives on adoption and the problems with applying the subsidiarity principle. Strengthening child protection systems in the countries of origin of adopted children is most consistent with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

BABY BLACK MARKET Pakistan's Stolen Children

In Pakistan, police have busted a child trafficking ring. They ran a black market for babies. Doctors, nurses and the clinics themselves had a hand in it. But many of the children will never return to their real parents.

After the birth of her son, Nusrat Khela Orakzai was overjoyed. The Pakistani woman and her husband now had two sons and two daughters. Perfect, they thought. But the happiness only lasted three days. The newborn was taken to a clinic in the nearest larger city, Peshawar, because of jaundice - and kidnapped from his hospital bed.

"If he had died, I could go to his grave and cry. That would be easier - but like this..." says Orakzai and bursts into tears. Since that terrible day a year and a half ago, not a moment has passed when she hasn't thought about her son.

The family hasn't given up looking for the boy. The little one probably fell into the hands of baby traffickers - not an isolated case in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, a poor province in northern Pakistan : the police are looking for hundreds of missing children there.

Paperless adoption puts cops on child trafficking trail

AHMEDABAD: When a childless couple from Shahpur was seen with a 10-day-old child earlier this week, it surprised many and one such observer informed city police about the incident on Monday. A police team reached Borsalli Apartment in Shahpur and found the child with the couple.

The couple said they had adopted the child from a hospital in Deesa. However, as there were no papers of adoption or government agencies involved, city police decided to take cognizance and approached Banaskantha police. Police detained one person in connection with the case and have started questioning to ascertain if this is a case of human trafficking.

Shahpur police said they got a call on Monday that Hiren Shah, a cloth trader, and his wife, were seen with a child. When police approached the family, they said the 10-day-old infant was adopted on January 21 from Aakash Hospital in Deesa through a man identified as Tinabhai. B J Gadhvi, inspector of Shahpur police station, said they recorded a non-cognizable offence and have sent the child and the case to Deesa for further investigation on Monday.

"The couple have been married for a decade and were trying to adopt a child. In their statement, the family mentioned that they learned about Aakash Hospital through their contacts and approached the officials there. They got a call and went there on January 21 and brought the child home," he said. The family members said that they got the child out of compassion and did not know about the rules. "We are cooperating with police in the probe," said a member of the extended family, who asked not to be identified by name.
