From one of our reporters UTRECHT - Since yesterday, anyone who has questions about his or her origin can contact the Roots Support Center in Utrecht. All information provided there to adopted children, their foster parents and other interested parties is free of charge.

75 volunteers are deployed at the Roots Support Center at 161 Oudegracht. The aim is for the support center to become 'an umbrella for adoptive countries'. Many adopted children or adoptive families still have to undertake a veritable quest to obtain information. Roots hopes that one phone call to the support center (030-2232000) will be enough to effectively search further.
Ton van der Haar, one of the founders of Roots: “An adoptee who wants to look for fellow sufferers or for his past, writes to the TV program Spoorloos, then to the Werkverband Adoptie Afterzorg, then to Wereldkinderen, ISS, and so on. .”
The majority of children admitted last year, 646 adoptees, came here through an intermediary organisation. To pay for the Roots Support Center, the mediation fee per child will increase by fifty guilders.
The interest in adoption remains the same, however. The Ministry of Justice announced yesterday that last year 1784 Dutch people applied to adopt a foreign foster child. That number is roughly the same as in 1996.
The 666 children who were taken into Dutch families last year came from 27 countries. The number of children from Ethiopia, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan increased, while the number of children from Haiti, Romania, Poland, the Philippines and, to a lesser extent, China decreased.

Steunpunt voor adoptievragen
Van een onzer verslaggevers UTRECHT - Iedereen die vragen heeft over zijn of haar afkomst, kan sinds gisteren terecht bij het Steunpunt Roots in Utrecht. Alle informatie die daar aan geadopteerde kinderen, hun pleegouders en andere belangstellenden wordt verstrekt, is gratis.

Bij het Steunpunt Roots aan de Oudegracht 161 worden 75 vrijwilligers ingezet. Het is de bedoeling dat het steunpunt 'een paraplu voor adoptieland' wordt. Nu nog moeten veel adoptiekinderen of adoptiegezinnen een ware speurtocht ondernemen om aan informatie te komen. Roots hoopt dat één telefoontje naar het steunpunt (030-2232000) al genoeg oplevert om effectief verder te zoeken.

Het merendeel van vorig jaar opgenomen kinderen, 646 geadopteerden, kwam hier via een bemiddelende organisatie. Om het Steunpunt Roots te bekostigen gaat de bemiddelingssom per kind met vijftig gulden omhoog.
De belangstelling voor adoptie blijft overigens gelijk. Het ministerie van justitie maakte gisteren bekend dat vorig jaar 1784 Nederlanders zich aanmeldden om een buitenlands pleegkind te adopteren. Dat aantal is ongeveer gelijk aan dat in 1996.
