There is only one blue veil left to lift to reconnect with an identity that was stolen from her when she was a child. This September 26, 2021, Marie Marre is progressing feverishly in the corridors of the small dilapidated building planted in the northeast of Bamako, the Malian capital. The usual uproar of the neighborhood gave way to a solemn silence. Slowly, the Frenchwoman of Malian origin draws aside the curtain. And then screams and sobs break out in the studio. Marie Marre throws herself into the arms of Fatoumata Cissé.
After thirty-two years of separation, the doctor, adopted in 1989 by a Norman couple, finds the biological mother from whom the French association Rayon de soleil for foreign children (RDSEE) tore her away. “All these years, I have only prayed to have the chance to see my child again one day before I die ,” groaned Fatoumata Cissé, hugging her daughter with all her might. Submerged, the Malian, now 56, collapses in tears on the dilapidated bed.
“I am very happy to see you. I've been looking for you for two and a half years ,” whispers Marie Marre, modestly trying to console this mother she doesn't remember. Since 2018, Le Monde, in partnership with TV5 Monde, has accompanied Marie Marre in her quest. In January 2020, we looked in Mali , alongside him, Fatoumata Cissé. In vain.
