Carlos was in desperate need of someone to love. The 5-year-old's mother had driven him to the end of a dirt road and asked him to get out of the truck and count. When the boy finished reciting his numbers, he turned around and she was gone.

Adoptees say local adoption system not free from irregularities

By Kim Young-gyo

SEOUL, May 14 (Yonhap) -- Following recent allegations of irregularities in international adoptions from Vietnam, Korean adoptees said Wednesday South Korea's adoption system has also had serious problems.

"Earlier signals about trafficking from Vietnam ... has significant comparisons with those of South Korea in earlier 1970s and 1980s," said a Dutch activist, who was adopted from South Korea, in an interview with Yonhap News Agency.

Hilbrand Westra has been actively involved in international adoption, working as a chairman of the Netherlands-based United Adoptees International, the first independent and international foundation by adoptees, since 2006 with a political and social aim to address problems involving adoption.

"In the seventies and eighties, many children disappeared from streets in Seoul and Busan. Many older Koreans in these cities have been confirming that they knew or heard about this. Still, no one ever asked for a thorough investigation in South Korea," Westra said.

Kemerovo Closed . . .

The last couple of weeks have been difficult reading/hearing the rumors of "changes". Involuntary thoughts & questions have rolled through my mind until Friday, when my agency officially communicated the “changes”. It has been hard to concentrate! My mind has wondered in & out of thoughts of hope, and then despair.

Part of my heart was hopeful, thinking it would be good news, since my dossier is already in Kemerovo waiting for registration. I thought, “Maybe I’m far enough along, it won’t affect me!” But a bigger, more realistic part of my heart knew that, once again, we were in for more delays & more wait. And, yes, unfortunately, the latter is true. Kemerovo is closed to International Adoptions until further notice. Below is the official update from my agency.

Kemerovo Update:

International Adoptions - Moratorium on International Adoptions from Liberia

International Adoptions - Moratorium on International Adoptions from Liberia

The Government of Canada has concerns regarding the adoption process and the child protection framework in Liberia. The Government of Canada has shared its concerns with the Canadian competent adoption authorities and suggested that a moratorium be implemented in light of the best interests of the child standard set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. These authorities have consequently implemented a moratorium on international adoptions from Liberia.

As of May 2008, the moratorium was effective across all Canada.

Claire Gibault and international adoption

"I will be absolutely stubborn and stubborn in my fight for international adoption"

Adoptive mother of two children, Claire Gibault (ALDE) has made child protection one of her priorities. Last February, the MP presented, alongside Jean-Marie Cavada (ALDE) and Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, a joint declaration on international adoption, which they believe should be encouraged. when there is no national solution.

Intercountry adoption is an issue close to your heart. What elements of your personal experience have influenced your positions on this subject?

I experience international adoption every day, and I feel compelled to defend a cause that seems essential to me for the protection of children. I adopted two children in Togo, which for me is a great success and a great joy. Our family also participates in interviews to show that international adoption is sometimes the solution that will allow children to live a normal life. In your opinion, the ban on international adoption by certain countries, such as Romania, does not meet its initial objectives of combating child trafficking. Why ?
